What's the Good Word This Week??

A writer is someone who can make a riddle out of an answer.  ~Karl Kraus

Good Afternoon Writers and Listeners,

If you know of anyone who would like to be on the email list, please feel free to share my info with them.  If you know of any events, please let me know.  If you have fliers, please pass them along.  If you will be part of an event, please share.  If there is something wrong on the venue list, please let me know as soon as you can.  I just don’t want to send people to a venue that no longer exists or has had a change in its program.  Remember knowledge is power!!

1.  Important Date Change!!! - Illustrations is every last Thursday of the month, so the next one is on March 29th.  The venue list has been updated to reflect this change.

2.  The Hampton Road Youth Poets will begin their 2012 Youth Poet Festival Slam at the Attucks Theatre on Saturday, March 24th, from 6:00 – 9:00.  Please come out and show your community and financial support for these kids who are extremely talented and wise beyond their years.  Remember, they’ll be representing 757 in San Francisco at Brave New Voices!!   (flier attached)

3.  A New Venue!! – Starting March 19th, Poetikk Justice will host an open mic for art, music, and poetry at the Montego Caribbean Restaurant and Bar, every Monday, from 7:00 – 9:00.  And by the way, the food is fantastical!!  (flier attached)

4.  Poetry and a Fundraiser – Verse-A-Style will be raising funds to help contribute to Trayvon Martin’s family legal funds.  On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin, 17 and unarmed, was shot down by George Zimmerman, that areas community watch captain.  Zimmerman explained it was self-defense; currently, charges have not been filed against him.  Martin’s family and the community are not satisfied with the investigation and are demanding answers and justice for the teen’s death.  I am attaching a link from NY Times about this incident: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/17/opinion/blow-the-curious-case-of-trayvon-martin.html

Please be sure to check my Facebook page or my blog:  www.goodwordpoetryplus.blogspot.com, for things that may come up during the week.

That’s all for now and have a good week.

What's the Good Word This Week??

Poetry is the language in which man explores his own amazement.  ~Christopher Fry

Good Morning Poets and Poet Fans,

Sorry about the delay in gettin’ this out.  I managed to lose an hour somewhere……. I also want to give a quick shout out to those who attending the poetry event at the Farmer's Market this afternoon.  Thank you again and again for your poetry support!!

This week will be a busy and great week for poetry and poetry events.  I hope everyone gets a chance to get out and read some or listen to some poetry!!

1.  ODU Part 1 – As a reminder, ODU will have a poetry slam, featuring Sonya Webb, on March 16th, starting at 8:00 (see venue list for details).  This is a free event and is open to the public.

2.  ODU Part 2 (The Ekphrastic Invasion!!) - ODU will also have an ekphrastic poetry event on March 17th, from 2:00 – 4:00.  Writers will draw inspiration from paintings, music, and dancers.  If you never had an opportunity to dip your hands in ekphrastic poetry, here’s your chance!!  It’s a great way to get those creative juices going and/or an opportunity to expand your writing experience.  (I’ve had the opportunity to attend one of these events, and I had a great time.)  Fellow poet, Jack Callan has played a big role in creating this event and bringing it ODU.  Best of all:  IT’S FREE AND OPEN TO ALL POETS!!
For more details, refer to the venue list and/or click on:  http://odumfafriends.webs.com/apps/calendar/showEvent?calID=6123994&eventID=166555333

4.  Teen Open-Mic is not Just for Teens – The VIBES Teen Open-Mic at Bean There Café is not exclusive to teenagers.  The event is HOSTED by teens, but all are welcomed to read and listen.  I didn’t know either….I went last night and had a blast; the place was packed!!  Those kids are so, so, talented.  If you missed it this month, no worries, it'll be back every 2nd Saturday of the month!!

5.  April is National Poetry Month – Before you know it, National Poetry Month will be here, and I’m gonna need your help.  I know there will be extra writing events going on in April, so if you hear about anything, please, please, let me know.  Speaking of which, as part of National Poetry Month, Natalie Diaz will be giving a lecture at the VB Higher Learning Center on April 19th.  To learn more about Natalie Diaz and the lecture, please click on the link:   http://www.odu.edu/ao/vbhec/news/diaz.shtml

6.  Make that Bazillion and Four Contests! – Bill Glose has a link on his website that will give you access to many, many, more writing contests.  Thank you, Bill, for letting me know about this link, and I’m positive that others appreciate it, too.  Variety really is the spice of life!!

7.  Internet Open Mics – For those who don’t have the opportunity to attend venues, for one reason or the other, there are open-mics courtesy of the Internet on blogtalkradio.com.  You will find a variety of talkradio stations.  You can listen or call in.  The choice is yours, and it’s all done in the comfort of your own home.  I will be including a link on my blog, for those who may be interested.  I’m attaching a link that will show all upcoming events this week:  http://www.blogtalkradio.com/schedule/poetry/week/25
