The Good Word This Week:

1.  Toni Morrison Celebration! -  One of our fellow 757 poets, Dina Reid, would like to extend an invitation to join her at Virginia Tech, on October 16th, to celebrate the life and works of the talented and Noble Prize winning author, Toni Morrison.  This special event will be hosted by Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Joanne Gabbin, the Executive Director of Furious Flower Poetry Center http://www.jmu.edu/furiousflower/.  The event is free but you must have a ticket to attend.  There will be some travelling cost involved to include van or bus rental and hotel accommodations.  For those who are interested, please, please, please contact Dina Reid (dsreid@odu.edu or Facebook) no later than JUNE 5TH so she can get an idea of how many people are going.  Don’t miss out on this amazing and rare opportunity!!!    http://www.jmu.edu/furiousflower/wm_library/Toni-Morrison-Program-Ad-Flyer.pdf

2.  Super Star June Readers in Norge! – The 1st Saturday poetry reading in Norge (June 2nd) promises not to disappoint.  The great line-up of featured readers are:  Former Poet Laureate of VA, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, three time published author, Suzanne Rhodes, William and Mary Professor, Henry Hart, and Richmond University Professor, J Ron Smith.  Please see venue list for more details. http://www.poetrysocietyofvirginia.org/

3.  Holiday Venue Check – It’s always a good rule of thumb to check with venues before attending when they fall on a holiday.

·         Wanna Slam?? – The Xpression Hub in Newport News will host a poetry slam tournament on Tuesday, May 29th, from 8:00 to 10:00.  The winner takes home a cash prize, so bring your “A” game.  The slam entry fee is $5 and general admission is $10.00. 1.  Sunday Reading @ Lola – On May 20th at 7:00, (from FaceBook Page)come for dinner, drinks, and great words! Please support our restaurant hosts and have dinner and drinks at the reading. Make a reservation—it guarantees you a space. Reservations will be accepted for those who are having dinner—otherwise seating is first-come, first-served. 2.  Anti-Bully Campaign (Support the Youth of Our Community) – (from TWP website) Teen with a Purpose (TWP) will host the Art is Our Weapon Youth Poetry Festival on Friday, May 25th beginning at 6:00.  During this event, the Hampton Roads Youth Poets (HRYP) and other Teens from the community will make a strong statement of non-tolerance towards bullying, while providing the audience the opportunity to explore the issues and the importance of their own role in combating bullying.  TWP encourages Youth, 13 to 18, to share their anti-bullying and other original, uplifting poetry. 3.  DC poet travels to VA’s Iris Art Studio – Davi Walders will be the featured poet at Iris Art Studio on Saturday, May 26th from 1:00 to 3:00.  She is the author of, “Women Against Tyranny: Poems of Resistance During the Holocaust.”  Ms. Walders is driving down from DC to share some of her poetry.  This will promise to be a very insightful afternoon.  Please see venue list for more details.  To learn more about the author, please go to her website:  http://daviwalders.com/wat.html (flier attached)

4.  Two Month Hiatus Notice – The open-mic at PFAC every 3rd Thursday will be taking a two-month hiatus for the months of June and July.
