There’s A Lot of Good Word This Week!!:


1.  VA Poet Laureate at Aromas!!!:  The newly selected VA Poet Laureate, Sophia Starnes will be the guest featured reader at the next Aromas open-mic on Tuesday, September 11th.  And for those who keep up on the challenges, the September challenge is to write a poem about your grandparents, and don’t forget to check out Word4Word website:  www.word4wordpoets.org
2. Ekphrastic Any”one”??:  There will be an ekphrastic show entitled, “In Honor of Women” on October at the Olde Towne Art Gallery.  From 9/16 to 9/30, they will be seeking writing submissions from local area poets.  For more info, please call 757-673-2667 or email: director@oldetowneart.com.  (flier attached)


3.  Ekphrastic Any”two”??:  Accomplished artist Bill Hobler will be showing his latest watercolor paintings, inspired by prolific poet, author, activist Wendell Berry’s collection of poems called “Leavings”.  Blue Skies Art is looking for poets to read the poems and/or add their own for their show on Friday, September 21st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.  For more info, please see the attached flier.

4.  Get Your Prose On!! 5.  Poe Resurrected??:  The Core Theatre Ensemble presents, “The Poe Project” at The Venue on 35th on October 5th and 6th, from 9:00 – 10:30.  Tickets are $15 (cash only).  (From Facebook) Get into the Halloween spirit with Core Theatre Ensemble at the Venue on 35th for two spooky performances. Come listen and watch such Edgar Allan Poe classics as The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Bells, Anabelle Lee, and The Raven brought to life. 6.  757 and Nuyorican:  On Saturday, September 22nd, the Nuyorican Café will have a Poetry Slam and Open-Mic.  So what does NY have to do with 757???  Good question!!  Well, the slam teams are (drum roll):  The Hampton Roads Slam Team vs. The Untamed Talent Slam Team of Brooklyn NY, and the host for the open-mic will be 757’s Mr. Speaker!!  Oh yes, the 757 will represent!! 7.  Erotic Poetry Internet Radio Style:  Got some erotic poetry you want to share, but you want to remain anonymous or feel uncomfortable sharing in front of people?  Well, Spoken Ink! will have a special night of erotic poetry, Verbal Lapdance, on Wednesday, August 29, starting at 7:00.  All you have to do is call in (646-478-5603) and share.  I dare you... New Venue!:  Nita Hurt is returning to the poetry scene with her new weekly venue, “The Breakfast Place”, at The Gourmet Breakfast Place in Chesapeake on Thursday, August 23rd from 8:30 to 11:30.  Four featured artists (poets/lyricists) will be allotted 15 minutes to show their stuff.  If you are interested in filling one of those slots, please contact her:  nitahurt@gmail.com.  For more details, please see venue listing.

1.  No More Art After September…. – PFAC has cancelled its 3rd Thursday Music and Poetry evenings.  The last Art after 5 will be on Thursday, September 20th, from 5:30ish to 7:30ish.

2.  Teens With a Purpose (TWP) Open Invitation!!:  (from TWP website)  YOU ALL ARE INVITED to the TWP Open House & HRYP Showcase Crispus Attucks Theatre on Monday, August 20th from 6pm to 8pm.  Join us for the TWP Open House. Learn how you can be the CHANGE your community needs and become a member of Teens With a Purpose. Enjoy spoken word by the Hampton Roads Youth Poets, and welcome back our 2012 Slam Team as they showcase their new poetry. They represented Hampton Roads at Brave New Voices, on an international stage, they were fearless and their voice was heard. Also featuring guest band Solstice Reb'l. Show them some love, come out and support this Monday!!

1.  Write it Out!:  Pete Freas will facilitate a class entitled, “Writing Your War” at the Muse Writers Center in Norfolk beginning Saturday, October 13th from 10:00 – 12:30.  This 6-week bi-weekly session is open to all writers ($185 to attend and $175 for returning students.

HRW Workshops Continues With…:  The next Travelling Pen Series workshop entitled, “Making a Scene: Snappy Dialogue Meets Concrete Detail”, is on August 18th from 9:45 to 12:45.  This two-hour workshop is designed to help the writer: 1. understand when and how to employ scene; 2. construct unique, believable dialogue that serves multiple functions; 3. choose details that ground the reader, evoke the senses, and convey relevant emotion. The class will include lecture, brief writing exercises, and group discussion. Valerie Wilkinson will present this workshop.   Message us to reserve your spot.
