Poetry First,

A Workshop With a View: Mountain Climbing Edition (Charlottesville)

For those who want to get a way from city life for a few hours...

Where and When:
Shenandoah National Park @ Noon

From the desk of Robert Owens:

Join us as we take a field trip to Charlottesville, VA to find inspiration in nature. We'll be hiking up a beginner's trail with the purpose of writing from on top of the world. Find something new to write about by using a perspective shift.

The Richmond contingent will be leaving RVA at 10:00 a.m. and should be returning between 5 and 7 p.m. Maybe after, I dunno, visiting the route 29 IHOP for P&P?

We'll be looking at the Blackrock Gap path in the Shenandoah National Park range.

Note: Apparently this is Easter for those of you who may find plans in that fact.

Dr. Hollis Earl Pruitt Memorial Poetry Series

Thomas Nelson Community College presents the Dr. Hollis Earl Pruitt Memorial Poetry Series in observance of National Poetry Month and to celebrate Dr. Pruitt’s lifelong love of poetry. Free and open to the public, the series will take place April 21 and April 28 at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, Templin Hall.

Sofia Starnes

The first evening will feature Virginia’s current Poet Laureate Sofia M. Starnes and the series will close with Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, 2006-2008 Poet Laureate.

Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda

The late Dr. Pruitt was a native of Mississippi. Upon completing high school in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1971, he joined the U.S. Army. He later earned a B.A. from the University of Arkansas, an M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Tennessee and a PhD in American Studies from William and Mary.

He joined Thomas Nelson’s faculty in 2001 and taught African American Studies, American Literature and Creative Writing. His poetry and prose have appeared in Virginia Adversaria, Windhover, American Poetry Review, The Brass Check and in a self-published volume, The Handbook of the Elves. He was also featured on Kreiter-Foronda’s website.

Thank you for passing this along, Regina. :-)

Dr. Hollis Pruitt

It is with the greatest sadness to tell everyone that my mentor, my friend and one of the greatest men I've ever known, Dr. Hollis Pruitt, passed away this morning.

As of right now that is all I know and I will be sure to try and keep you posted on any arrangements.

If anyone hears anything before me, please pass it along (via email to tchatman4@cox.net), and I will be sure to get it out to everyone.

Please keep Lynn and Shanzi in your thoughts and prayers.
