River City Secrets Henry Street Gallery, 422 W. Broad St., RVA 23220 Friday July 11, 7pm Poetry and the divine are hand-in-hand this month at the Henry Street Gallery. This is gonna be a spectacular evening, as RCS in July coincides with the gallery's opening for its latest show, "Gods & Goddesses," from 6-10pm. The main event though, will be our dynamic feature poet, James "Mr.Speaker" Sears. Trust me, it's a performance you don't wanna miss. As always, our open mic is free to all and any wishing to share a verse or two of their own. Light refreshments will be provided. This event is supported by CultureWorks, but we will be accepting donations to help out the gallery itself. The secret is out... where the locals go to get their word on.
Monday Night Workshop & Critique Series Urban Farmhouse Market & Cafe 6:30-8pm We're suffering through the dog days of summer with reduced critique/workshop hours. Never fear! We'll be back full swing in the fall. In the meantime, our small group critique session powers on. Please join us Monday, July 14 with a poem or two and a handful of copies to share. We'll be at the Shockoe location (1217 E. Cary St. RVA 23219) eager & ready for feedback. As always, these sessions are open to all experience levels & completely free.
Poetry & Jazz Tasting C'est Le Vin, 15 N. 17th St. Thursday July 17, 7pm Cool off with a glass of chilled white, smooth tunes and of course some ear-soothing poetry at C'est Le Vin on our third-Thursday Poetry & Jazz Tasting. Over the course of the evening, you'll get a taste of poetry from local wordsmiths of all experience & publication levels, layered with live jazz by the gentlemen of Super64 and songstress Wendy Carter. The whole is as always set off by C'est le Vin's alluring wine selection, plus a re-vamped menu & backdrop of inspiring art. (Have a few verses to throw down yourself? Make sure to get on the list! Look for me early in the evening or email ahead of time: dottoressa.joanna at hotmail dot com)
