Thursday September 7, 7pm
We start off September with our usual first Thursday night of poetic & musical awesomeness at Shockoe winebar C'est Le Vin! Local wordsmiths share a taste of their talent, and Bob Lambert of Super64 & friends stretch their creative repertoires for an unforgettable evening of live performance. Come raise a glass with us! (The more poetry the merrier, so if you'd like to share a poem or two, drop me a message or find me early on in the evening!)
Words on Fire: Poetry Happy Hour at Firehouse
Firehouse Theatre, 1609 W. Broad St., RVA 23220
Tuesday September 12, 6pm
Nothing like a mid-week, mid-month poetry happy hour to shake up the work week & inject your routine with a little fun & inspiration! Sit back and relax with a beverage while you take in the words of our community showcase poet, or even step up yourself for the open mic portion of the evening.
$5 gets you in.
(Just a friendly reminder that if you're interested in being a showcase poet at a future Words on Fire event, you can now apply on our new website!)
Poetry Night @ Café Zata

Friday September 22, 7pm
We round out September at our regular 4th Friday hangout, Cafe Zata. This ever-growing open mic is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends & make new ones, try out poems you've been working on, or just kick back, take it all in, and get inspired. Great food, adult beverages, coffee, sweets & more. No language or theme restriction. Sign up early to maximize your mic time!
Monday Night Sessions
Workshops are back in session! September through May, we hold workshops on 3rd Monday nights as well as critique groups on the 2nd & 4th Mondays. Workshop topics vary by month, and a complete curriculum for 2017-18 can be found here.
The full Monday night September schedule is as follows (please note time and location difference for workshop):
Monday, September 11, 6:30-8pm– Small group critique, Urban Farmhouse Shockoe, 1217 E. Cary St. RVA 23219
Monday, September 18, 6:00-8pm– Workshop: Taking up the Editing Shears, Urban Farmhouse Rocketts Landing, 4821 Old Main Street, RVA 23231
Monday, September 25, 6:30-8pm– Small group critique, Urban Farmhouse Shockoe, 1217 E. Cary St. RVA 23219
As a reminder, critique nights and workshops continue to be open to all writing experience levels (unless otherwise noted) and completely free of charge. If you're inspired by what you learn, however, we encourage you to make a totally OPTIONAL secure online donation to support our workshops & events. 100% of funds (minus a small PayPal fee) go directly to the instructor and the furthering of these sessions. Thanks for all your help so far!
You may notice a little something missing from our September lineup: Tea for Two, our spring/fall reading series in partnership with Richmond Public Library, has been cancelled for September due to some misfortunes in scheduling. Never fear! We intend to return and round out the 2017 Tfor2 series in October as planned.
Meanwhile, if you're still looking for inspiration in addition to all we've got going on, and all the myriad other writer-ly happenings in and around the River City, you might consider a road trip to Charlottesville near the end of the month. Specifically, the 100 Thousand Poets for Change readings at Writer House September 30. I hear the leaves are pretty up there that time of year...
Yours in poetry,
